The House of Representatives has initiated an investigation into the Ministry of Women’s Affairs over allegations of excessive spending and financial mismanagement.
The inquiry was triggered by claims of non-payment to contractors despite the release of funds and allegations that the minister diverted N1.5 billion (U.S.$1 million) intended for contractor payments.
The investigation has uncovered that the ministry spent an astonishing N66.5 million (U.S. $47,281) on various activities, including N45 million (U.S.$31,995) for a New Year’s party, N20 million (U.S.$14,220) on sanitary pads, and N1.5 million (U.S.$1,066) on vehicle fuel. Additionally, the ministry is accused of awarding contracts in 15 states without including them in the 2023 budget.
Minister of Women Affairs Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye has been summoned to appear before the House Committee on Women’s Affairs and Social Development to justify these expenditures. She has previously denied the allegations.
The Committee has also ordered the suspension of all 2024 contract processes by the Ministry until the whereabouts of the funds are clarified.
