Nigeria’s Passport Power Ranks Low Globally

A new report by Henley and Partners reveals Nigeria’s passport ranks 92nd in global visa-free travel access, tying with Lebanon and Myanmar.

The report, which draws on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), shows that Nigerian passport holders can travel to only 45 destinations without a visa. This is a stark contrast to the top-ranking Singaporean passport, which offers visa-free access to 195 countries. Among African nations, Nigeria also fares poorly, ranking as the sixth lowest in terms of visa-free travel access.

Nigeria’s ranking has seen significant fluctuations over the years, dropping to a record low of 103rd in 2021 before improving slightly to 92nd in the latest report. In comparison, Seychelles leads Africa with visa-free access to 156 countries, followed by Mauritius with 150 and South Africa with 106 countries, all of which are well ahead of Nigeria.

The report underscores Nigeria’s challenges with visa policies and travel freedom, marking it as one of the more restrictive passports globally.
