Yoruba rights activist and self-determination advocate Sunday Adeyemo, known as Sunday Igboho, has issued an eviction notice to Fulani herders in Southwest Nigeria.
Through a voice message delivered by his spokesperson, Olayomi Koiki, Igboho specifically warned “all the herders, who are still in our forests perpetrating killing, abduction of farmers and destruction of farmlands with their cattle” to leave immediately.
Igboho has made similar calls in the past, including a visit to Ogun State, one of the Southwest states, in February 2024 to enforce such an eviction. He said he is “very worried that Fulani herders are making it difficult for our people to farm by grazing their cattle on farms where crops are destroyed.”
Igboho, a controversial figure, gained fame in the 1990s during a communal conflict and has been a symbol of Yoruba self-determination. In 2021, his residence was raided by Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) on allegations of stockpiling arms and advocating for secession.
He fled to the Benin Republic but was subsequently arrested by Beninese authorities. After a lengthy legal battle with the Nigerian government seeking his extradition, Igboho was eventually released and he returned to Nigeria in 2024.
