A brutal attack has claimed the lives of eight community leaders in Imo State, Southeast Nigeria. The gunmen stormed a meeting at the home of the community’s president-general in Umucheke Okwe, Onuimo county (Local Government Area), on Saturday evening.
Among the victims was Hyginus Ohazurike, the president-general, and seven other village heads. The assailants opened fire on the group, killing all eight before fleeing the scene.
The motive for the attack remains unclear. Local residents are terrified and have called on security forces to increase their presence in the area.
The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are underway to apprehend the perpetrators. This latest violence adds to the growing insecurity in the State, with residents living in fear of attacks by armed groups.
