In an effort to strengthen regional security, Nigeria’s Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher Musa, met with the leadership of the Niger Republic’s military junta in Niamey, the country’s capital. The meeting, which took place on Wednesday, aimed to explore pathways to combat terrorism in the Sahelian region.
Musa, who is also the Chairman of the ECOWAS Committee of Defence Chiefs, was accompanied by a delegation, including Emmanuel Undiandeye, the Chief of Defence Intelligence. The discussion focused on collaboration to tackle insecurity and other related matters in the West African region.
Notably, the meeting comes after Musa’s recent call for the return of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso to the regional bloc, following their resignation due to ECOWAS’ perceived interference in their internal affairs. Musa emphasized the need for their return to defeat the region’s insecurity, particularly insurgency.
While the details of the meeting remain undisclosed by Nigerian military authorities, the visit is believed to be connected to Musa’s efforts to reunite the countries with ECOWAS.
