Vice President Kashim Shettima declared Nigeria’s commitment to providing refuge for Africans displaced by conflicts and natural disasters during a meeting with a United Nations delegation at the State House on Wednesday.
Shettima assured the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) delegation that President Bola Tinubu is fully on board with efforts to ease the plight of displaced individuals both within Nigeria and beyond its borders. “We will continue to accommodate our brother Africans displaced by conflict and natural disasters,” he said. “Our partnership with the UN family will only be strengthened.”
He also welcomed new collaborative ideas, especially those focusing on sustainable refugee resettlement, to prevent donor fatigue.
Raouf Mazou, the UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Operations, praised Nigeria’s handling of refugees and outlined the agency’s shift toward sustainable development strategies. He discussed plans to utilize World Bank resources to support host communities and enhance refugee self-reliance.
