At Least 17 ISWAP Insurgents Drown During Escape on Nigeria-Niger Border

At least 17 militants from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) drowned while attempting to cross a river along the border between Nigeria and Niger. The militants were trying to travel from the village of Kafetoa to Bulabulin Gaidam when they were swept away by strong currents.

According to intelligence sources, the insurgents were en route to Tam village in Niger, near the Nigerian border town of Kannamma in Yobe State, when the incident occurred. The militants had been displaced from several of their bases, including Bulabulin Geidam, Chettimari, and Diffan, near the Nigeria-Niger border.

Details on the incident are scanty but Zagazola Makama reported that strong water currents overwhelmed the militants as they tried to cross the river, leading to the fatalities.
