DSS Frees 6 #EndBadGovernance Protesters; 3 Face Treason Charges

The Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria’s secret police, has released six protesters arrested in Northwest Kaduna State during the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations. The protests, held from August 1 to 10, 2024, were in response to the country’s ongoing economic challenges.

According to DSS sources, six of the detainees were released after investigations concluded, while three others will face prosecution.

“On September 19, 2024, six persons held in Kaduna were released after being cleared at the end of investigations. Meanwhile, three are being prosecuted as prima facie cases have been established against them,” a DSS source revealed.

The protests also led to the arrest and arraignment of 10 activists, including British citizen Andrew Wynne, aka Andrew Povich. The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, charged the protesters with conspiracy and treason, accusing them of “acting in concert to destabilize the country.”

The charges filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja include accusations of inciting mutiny and damaging government properties, including the NCC Complex in Kano. The DSS has yet to issue an official comment.
