Gunmen launched a series of deadly attacks in Imo State, Southeast Nigeria on Tuesday night, killing a police officer and two security guards, and torching police facilities in the Obowo and Isiala Mbano Counties.
The police officer was dragged from his residence and killed by the assailants. “They took their time to identify who is a student and a police officer in that compound before killing him,” an eyewitness reported. The attackers reportedly spent over 45 minutes at the scene before fleeing, only for military forces to arrive an hour and a half later.
The violence continued early Wednesday morning as the Otoko Divisional Police Station in Obowo was set ablaze. Similarly, in Isiala Mbano, gunmen attacked the local council secretariat, killing two citizen guards and burning vehicles.
Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye, vowed that the perpetrators would be brought to justice, stating, “The Command has deployed tactical teams to apprehend those responsible for this crime.” The attacks have left residents fearful, despite reassurances of increased security measures.
