Nigeria Calls for Africa’s Permanent Seat on UN Security Council

Nigeria has renewed its demand for permanent representation for Africa on the United Nations Security Council, citing its significant contributions to global peacekeeping missions.

Speaking at the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York on Sunday, Nigeria’s Minister of Defense, Mohammed Badaru, emphasized the country’s long-standing commitment to international peace and security.

“Nigeria has contributed to 41 peacekeeping operations worldwide, with over 200,000 troops deployed since 1960,” he said. Badaru also highlighted Nigeria’s involvement in numerous African peace operations, including missions in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Mali.

The minister called for Security Council reforms to ensure Africa’s fair representation, stating, “Nigeria continues to call for the reform of the United Nations Security Council to give just representation to Africa permanently for inclusivity and deepening of global peace and security.”

In addition to peacekeeping, Badaru underscored the urgent need to address security threats in the Sahel region, such as transnational crime and arms trafficking. He called on the international community to intensify efforts to combat these threats, warning that illicit arms exacerbate instability across the region.
