Nigerian Governor Reward Youths with $188K for Boycotting Hunger Protest

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has announced a cash reward of $188,170 (₦310 million) to youth leaders across the State’s 31 counties for boycotting the ten-day #EndBadGovernance protests in August.

During a thank-you rally in Uyo on Tuesday, Governor Eno explained that each local government would receive $6,070 (₦10 million), distributed across party lines.

“The leadership of the youths in each LGA will receive the money and distribute it across party lines,” the Governor said, fulfilling a promise he made before the protests.

Governor Eno acknowledged the youths’ concerns, citing issues such as hunger, unemployment, and the rising cost of food.

“Although you did not protest, we heard your concerns loud and clear. We are aware of the issues causing you distress,” he said, pledging to address these problems within the state’s resources.
