Nigeria is now part of eleven African countries that have experienced a decline in governance over the past decade, according to the “2024 Ibrahim Index of African Governance,” published by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.
The report shows Nigeria dropping three places from 30th to 33rd on the continent.
The study indicates that while 33 countries have improved their governance since 2014, 21 nations, including Nigeria, have seen governance levels worsen. This group includes Sudan, Senegal, Tunisia, Uganda, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Eswatini, Guinea, Mauritius, and Mozambique.
Nigeria faced declines in 10 of 16 sub-categories, with five showing drops greater than five points.
The most significant decline was in ‘Security and Safety’, which fell by 11 points, ranking Nigeria among the bottom five countries. The ‘Absence of Armed Conflict’ saw a steep decline of 49.8 points, placing Nigeria 54th in this category.
