The Nigerian presidency has dismissed concerns over the absence of both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima from the country, stressing that governance remains unaffected.
Tinubu left Nigeria on October 3 for a two-week working vacation in the United Kingdom, while Shettima is on a two-day official visit to Sweden. “There is no leadership vacuum in the country,” said Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the President on information.
“All state organs are functioning as usual. The Senate President, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, ministers, and service chiefs are performing their duties to ensure smooth governance,” Onanuga stated. He added that Tinubu, despite being on leave, “has been busy answering phones and issuing directives on matters of state.”
The vice president is expected to engage in bilateral talks in Sweden, including meetings with Crown Princess Victoria and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. His visit also seeks to foster collaborations in technology, education, and agriculture.
The presidency noted similar situations in the past, noting that Nigeria’s Constitution does not require the constant physical presence of both leaders for effective governance. Shettima is set to return on Saturday, while Tinubu will resume duties upon completing his leave.
