Nigerian student enrollment at U.S. colleges and universities increased to 20,029 for the 2023/2024 academic year, according to the 2024 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange.
The report, published Tuesday by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education, shows a 13.5 percent rise from the previous year. This positions Nigeria as the largest African source of international students to the United States and the seventh globally.
“The influx of Nigerian students is a testament to the robust educational ties between the U.S. and Nigeria,” the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria said. More than 55 percent of Nigerian students are pursuing graduate-level studies, reflecting strong academic backgrounds and a commitment to advanced education
Overall, U.S. colleges and universities are hosting 1,126,690 international students this year, a record high for international enrollment.
