West Africa Rallies Behind Nigeria’s Push for Permanent UN Council Seat

Nigeria has gained backing from several West African countries for its bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. Africa, with 54 countries, currently lacks permanent representation.

The United States has proposed adding two African permanent seats, with Nigeria, South Africa, and Egypt seen as top contenders. Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, confirmed recent diplomatic visits to Togo, Côte D’Ivoire, Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau to gain their support.

“Everywhere we went, we had the opportunity to discuss and solicit support for Nigeria’s intention to become a permanent member…and all the countries we visited…assured us of their support when the time comes,” Tuggar said. He added that some nations promised immediate groundwork for Nigeria’s bid.

Tuggar emphasized that Nigeria’s Security Council representation would allow Africa to have a voice on global issues, noting that “68 percent of decisions made at the Council involved Africa.” He acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to the effort, saying “President (Bola) Tinubu is pushing hard, fully committed to it.”
