Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman has been crowned Africa’s Best Player at the 2024 CAF Awards, held Monday night at the Palais des Congrès in Marrakech, Morocco.
The Atalanta star, who succeeded compatriot Victor Osimhen as Africa’s top footballer, was recognized for his standout performances, including a hat-trick in Atalanta’s UEFA Europa League final win last May, securing the club’s first European title in nearly 60 years.
The night was a major success for Nigeria. The Super Falcons won Women’s National Team of the Year, and the Falcons’ goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie retained her Goalkeeper of the Year title.
President Bola Tinubu praised the winners and celebrated their accomplishments. “These athletes embody the essential Nigerian Spirit. They signpost the best in us as a nation,” he said. ‘‘Let no one ever write us off. I am incredibly proud of them.”
