Nigeria’s top military officer, General Christopher Musa, announced that 129,417 Boko Haram terrorists and their family members surrendered to security forces between July 10 and December 9, 2024.
The surrenders include 30,426 fighters, 36,774 women, and 62,265 children. Musa credited the milestone to a mix of kinetic and non-kinetic strategies.
“The increasingly frequent surrenders signify the fruitful impact of our comprehensive approach,” Musa said. “We have made significant progress in fostering a peaceful society that guarantees improved socio-economic conditions for our citizens. While challenges remain, we are not where we were as of June 2023”
The National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) played a pivotal role in this success. Similar to the United States’ National Counterterrorism Center, the NCTC oversees Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategy, coordinating the military, law enforcement, and intelligence agencies.
NCTC Coordinator Major General Adamu Laka noted that five terrorism trial phases had yielded 505 convictions, while military operations reclaimed territories and weakened Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents.
