Nigeria’s Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has called for non-military strategies to address the country’s worsening security problems. Abbas said Nigeria must adopt “non-kinetic and innovative solutions” beyond military action to combat terrorism, banditry, and violence.
“Diplomatic dialogue, economic empowerment, psychological interventions, and community-based initiatives are essential elements of a sustainable security framework,” Abbas said. He cited Rwanda and Kenya as examples where such strategies have reduced extremist ideologies.
Abbas noted that Nigeria has spent billions on military operations in recent decades, including N3.25 trillion, or 12 percent of the 2024 national budget, allocated to defense and security.
While acknowledging the military’s role, he stressed the need to tackle insecurity’s root causes through education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
