Nigeria Delivers Harsh Sentences to Over 200 Terrorists in Anti-Terrorism Trial

The Nigerian government has secured the conviction of over 200 terrorists during the recently concluded Phase Six Terrorism Trials held from December 9 to December 13, 2024. This follows the Phase 5 trials held in July 2024, where 143 cases were heard, and 125 convictions were secured.

The trials, part of the government’s ongoing efforts against terrorism, included cases related to Boko Haram, the Biafran secessionist insurgency, and banditry.

A total of 237 cases were heard in December, with sentences ranging from the death penalty to life imprisonment, as well as terms of 20 to 70 years. According to the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), these sentences reflect “the severity of their crimes.”

Those convicted included individuals involved in attacks on civilians, destruction of religious sites, abductions, and terrorism-financing.

The NCTC said the trials, conducted in compliance with international justice standards, was in line with the Nigerian government’s “unyielding resolve to dismantle all aspects of terrorist networks.”
