Nigeria has requested South Africa’s backing for its bid to secure full membership in the G20, BRICS, and the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB).
Nigeria’s junior foreign affairs minister, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, also sought support for Nigeria to assume leadership roles in key discussions under South Africa’s G20 presidency, which began December 1.
“We are strongly committed to seeking a resolution of the crisis in Sudan, and in this guise, we seek South Africa’s support to further accelerate the peace process,” Odumegwu-Ojukwu said, highlighting President Bola Tinubu’s role in the African Union’s mediation efforts.
South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Roland Lamola, acknowledged Nigeria’s requests, pledging to amplify Africa’s voice during South Africa’s G20 presidency. “We will count on Nigeria’s wise counsel as we assume this major responsibility,” he said.
