Nigerian Military Denies Reports of French Base in Borno State

The Nigerian Defense Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed claims about a French military base being established in Nigeria as “fake, totally false and mischievous.”

Over the weekend, one Mahdi Shehu made a post on X alleging that French soldiers had arrived in Borno State, Northeast Nigeria, to set up the base. He said the French troops were received by Nigeria’s Army Chief and deployed to “help Nigeria in fighting Boko Haram.”

“Believe it or not, Nigeria is a new France (sic) colony in Africa. Northern Nigeria is its new colony,” Shehu added.

On Monday, DHQ spokesperson Director Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, refuted the claims in a statement. “The Armed Forces of Nigeria hereby states unequivocally that this information is fake, totally false and mischievous,” said Buba.

He also urged the public to ignore such reports, saying they are “the antics of mischief makers.”
