Authorities in Akwa Ibom State, Southern Nigeria, uncovered an illegal gun factory operated by a father and his sons, officials announced Monday.
Joseph O. Eribo, the State’s Commissioner of Police, revealed the discovery during a press briefing in Uyo, the capital city of Akwa Ibom.
Acting on a tip, police raided the facility, arresting a suspect, David Nse Emmanuel. However, the alleged mastermind, Akpan Nse Emmanuel, and his other sons escaped.
“During the operation, one David Nse Emmanuel was arrested, while his father, Akpan Nse Emmanuel, and his brothers, who jointly run the business, fled,” said Eribo.
Police seized seven single-barrel guns, five double-barrel guns, a steel double-trigger pistol, and materials used to manufacture firearms. Efforts are ongoing to capture the fugitives.
