South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to simplify visa rules for Nigerians is stirring controversy back home. On Tuesday, Ramaphosa announced that Nigerian businesspeople can now get five-year multiple-entry visas, and tourists won’t need to submit their passports to apply.
“Our efforts to create a favorable environment include our simplified visa process for Nigerian business people to travel to South Africa,” Ramaphosa said, adding that this effort aims to boost stronger business and tourism ties.
But not everyone’s on board. Many South Africans took to social media, voicing concerns about the decision. One user, @Packer_an, tweeted, “Why Nigeria of all countries?” Another, @Bongani_Wale, called Ramaphosa a “traitor,” saying, “Why would South Africa opt to ease visa rules with Nigeria whilst other countries are considering canceling them because of the delinquent behaviors of these people?”
Others are worried about the broader implications. “A 5-year visa deal? More like a 5-year disaster for South Africa,” wrote @visse_ss, accusing Ramaphosa of gambling with the country’s economy and safety.
Despite the criticisms, Ramaphosa remains optimistic of a “bright future” for the two countries.
