Nigerian Army cracks secessionists’ bunker in Southeast Nigeria, kills one

Troops of the Nigerian Army (NA) carried out a dawn raid on a secret base of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) insurgents and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in the Orsumoghu area of Anambra State on Monday.

In a statement on its X page, the Nigerian Army said the operation led to the death of one IPOB/ESN fighter. Other gang members escaped with gunshot wounds. No arrests were made.

Earlier on Saturday (Dec. 9), there was a face-off between the Nigerian troop and a group of insurgents. “However, due to superior firepower the criminals were forced to abandon their location,” the NA social media post said. Some items recovered from the fleeing insurgents include three locally made hand grenades, a Nigeria Police Force uniform and fragmental jacket, and charms.

IPOB has been campaigning for southeast Nigeria to be recognized as an independent country. The Nigerian government has in recent times intensified efforts to clamp down on the secessionist group, blaming it for most criminal activity in the southeast region. The group denies the allegations.
