Nigerian senators are using their pay checks for December to support the survivors of the fatal accidental military strike in Tudun Biri village, Kaduna State. The amount totalled N109 million ($137,863), indicating that the senators contributed N1 million ($1,264) each.
Barau Jibrin, Nigeria’s deputy senate president, announced the donation on Sunday when he led a Senate delegation to the Kaduna State Government House to commiserate with the people of the State over the tragedy.
“We are here to show our solidarity and to show the fact that we stand by the Government of Kaduna State and indeed the entire people of this state, particularly, the people of Tudun Biri in this trying period that the state is experiencing,” Jibrin said.
Though the Nigerian Army accepted responsibility for the incident, explaining that its troops were on a routine mission against terrorists when the “mistake” occurred, the Nigerian authorities reportedly are reluctant to demand accountability.
President Bola Tinubu ordered a probe of what he termed a “bombing mishap”, and the lawmakers said they were on the “same page” with the President.
