Nigerian Government Inflates Charges Against ex-Central Bank Governor Emefiele

Nigerian authorities have increased the criminal charges against Godwin Emefiele, the immediate past governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), from six to 20.

Emefiele has been in detention since June 10, 2023, a day after he was suspended as the CBN governor by President Bola Tinubu.

In December, he was fingered in a massive corruption scandal running into hundreds of billions of naira that dragged the Nigerian economy to its knees. Yet an Abuja court went ahead to grant him bail after he pleaded “Not guilty” to the six-count charges against him.

But the Nigerian government seems unrelenting to let him off the hook. Emefiele is now accused of criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery, procurement fraud, and conspiracy to commit a felony. Nigerians are curious to see the end of the cat-and-mouse game between the former CBN boss and the authorities.
