President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria on Tuesday gave high assurances of dealing a blow to armed gangs responsible for the abductions, massacre and displacement of Nigerians before he leaves office.
Nigerian authorities have been fighting an insurgency since 2009 against Islamic State-allied terrorists who call themselves Boko Haram (western learning forbidden) or Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the northeastern region.
The country also struggles to contain motorbike-riding gangs known locally as “bandits” who carry out deadly attacks on communities in the northwestern region. Confronting the mountain of insecurity remains a paramount challenge for Tinubu.
Tinubu became Nigeria’s president in May 2023. Unlike many previous Nigerian rulers, he has no military experience, raising concerns that the festering criminal enterprise might overwhelm him.
But on Tuesday, Tinubu said he would completely stamp out “every agent of darkness”, referring to Boko Haram, banditry and kidnapping gangs in the country. In his words, “We won’t rest until every agent of darkness is completely rooted out.”
