In a move aimed at honoring the sacrifices and dedication of law enforcement officers, Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has declared April 7 as National Police Day, and the first week of April as National Police Week.
This declaration comes alongside plans to reform the police force, with a focus on improving training and upgrading equipment. President Tinubu believes these reforms are crucial to establishing a more modern, professional, and effective police force capable of serving the needs of the Nigerian people.
The announcement, made on Monday during the maiden edition of the Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations ceremony, underscores Tinubu’s commitment to supporting and uplifting the morale of the police force.
Speaking at the event, Tinubu emphasized the need to appreciate the bravery and selflessness exhibited by officers in the line of duty, often under challenging circumstances. “We don’t see you as just the shields of the nation, we don’t see you as robots. This is why we are here; we are here to humanize you,” Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented Tinubu at the event, said.
“At a time in Nigeria’s history when the nation’s security architecture is being stretched beyond elastic limits, the citizens have been able to endure in the face of security threats as well as attacks on their lives and livelihoods due to the commitment of the police.”
The National Police Day is expected to become an annual event marked by ceremonies, tributes, and initiatives aimed at honoring the bravery and dedication of Nigeria’s police force.
