Road Safety Officers Abducted in Ebonyi

Two Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) personnel were abducted on March 8, 2024, along the Abakaliki–Enugu highway in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. The officers, returning from duty at the Nkalagu FRSC office, were allegedly kidnapped by gunmen. Nkalagu is a community in Ebonyi, 27.34 miles from the State capital city Abakaliki.

The Ebonyi FRSC Sector Commander, Henry Igwe, expressed concern about the officers’ safety and the general security situation. “The families said that some people contacted them that they were kidnappers and were demanding ransom,” Igwe said. “The negotiations are between the families and kidnappers, and as an organisation, we have been doing the much we can.”

While the exact motive behind the abduction remains unclear, it highlights the vulnerability of even officials working to ensure road safety. The FRSC has collaborated with security agencies to locate the missing officers, and negotiations reportedly involve ransoms demanded by the kidnappers.
