Security forces in Niger State, located in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, have discovered numerous improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and bombs in various locations. The areas include Galadima-Kogo in Shiroro County, Mutun-Daya in Munya County, and the Gbeganu area in Minna, the state’s capital.
Niger State Police Command spokesman, SP Wasiu Abiodun, shared that these explosives were uncovered during counter-insurgency operations conducted between 2021 and 2023. He explained that the IEDs had been concealed and buried at different sites.
This discovery is particularly significant, especially considering a tragic bomb explosion in Galadima-Kogo in 2022, which claimed the lives of officers from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.
The recovered explosives were safely destroyed on August 22, 2024, at a secure location behind Zuma Rock in Suleja. The operation was led by SP Mohammed Mamun, Officer in Charge of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal – Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit of the Command.
Further details about the discoveries or ongoing counter-insurgency efforts have not yet been released.
