Judge Opts Out of Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial Following Accusations of Bias

The trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) separatist group that seeks independence for Nigeria’s southeastern region, faced another delay as Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja recused herself from the case on Tuesday.

Kanu, who is facing terrorism charges, expressed frustration during the proceedings, telling his lawyer to step aside and directly address the court. “I have no confidence in this court anymore,” Kanu said, demanding the judge’s withdrawal. He accused the judge of refusing to adhere to a Supreme Court ruling that permitted him to seek redress for the violation of his fundamental rights.

Despite objections from the federal government’s lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo, Justice Nyako chose to recuse herself. “I don’t have problems recusing myself. In fact, I will be happy to do so,” she said, citing disruptions caused by Kanu’s outburst.

The case will now be reassigned to a new judge by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court. Meanwhile, Kanu remains in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). His trial has been ongoing since his arrest in 2015, and this latest development adds further uncertainty to its conclusion.
