Northern Nigeria Struggles with Rising Insecurity

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has painted a bleak picture of the security situation in northern Nigeria, describing it as a pervasive force spreading death, poverty, and misery throughout the region.

“Insecurity is walking with two legs in the northern parts of the country,” CNG President Jamilu Charanchi stated on Saturday during an event in Northwest Katsina State aimed at encouraging community involvement in addressing the region’s socio-economic challenges.

The group attributed the region’s underdevelopment to “decades of leadership decay,” which it said triggered the collapse of social values, immorality, and governance standards. According to Charanchi, these failures have resulted in widespread poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, and insecurity. “The high number of out-of-school children reflects these crises,” he added.

Charanchi stressed the need for community-based solutions to complement government efforts, arguing that only coordinated action can tackle the root causes of the region’s challenges.
