Senate President Akpabio Tells Nigerians to Scavenge for Free Food Amid Economic Hardship

President of the Nigerian Senate Godswill Akpabio has advised Nigerians to take any opportunity to eat free food in light of the economic challenges facing the country.

“Times are difficult, and wherever you see free food, please endeavour to avail yourself,” Akpabio said in a video that went viral on Sunday. His comment drew laughter from fellow senators, despite the serious economic struggles many Nigerians are facing.

The statement comes amid widespread frustration over policies introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, including the removal of the gas subsidy, floating of the naira, and increased taxes, all of which have driven up the cost of living.

Akpabio’s comments have been criticized, particularly given his history of making unguarded statements. In July, he mocked Nigerians planning the #EndBadGovernance protest, saying, “Those who want to protest can protest, but let us be here eating.”
