The police in Rivers State, South-South Nigeria have arrested a wanted kidnap gang leader, Sunday Amadi, popularly known as “Occasion”, who had a bounty of N2 million ($2,427.59) on his head.
Occasion and his gang are suspected of being behind the series of kidnappings along the East–West Road in Rivers State.
Occasion was downed in the early hours of Wednesday during a gun battle with police officers who stormed his hideout. Four of the notorious kidnapper’s captives, who had been ruthlessly tortured and robbed, were set free.
Another successful crackdown on kidnap gangs in Southeast Enugu State on Tuesday saw the killing of a bandit and the rescue of four hostages an hour after they were abducted.
Enugu State Police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe said the police officers confronted the kidnappers in a forest at Agbogazi-Nike in Enugu East County.
“The hoodlums, upon sighting the operatives, opened fire on them, but the gallant and tactical operatives returned fire, neutralising one of the hoodlums (and) forcing others to escape with gunshot wounds,” he said.
