Nigeria’s Senate President Godswill Akpabio says the allegations against Godwin Emefiele, former central bank boss, are so numerous that the government can’t decide which charges should come first.
“Whether to charge him for putting foam on top of the bill or to charge him for illegal possession of firearms or to charge him for printing notes without income, I don’t know what we are going to charge him with,” Senator Akpabio said on Sunday.
Emefiele was suspended a week after Tinubu assumed office as Nigeria’s president. He was picked up by the Department of State Services (DSS) to answer to charges of fraud and was detained until December 22 after a court granted him bail.
Despite his bail, the Nigerian authorities still do not want to let him go. The charges against him were recently expanded, and he was accused of moving US$6,230,000 from the bank’s vault using the forged signature of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari.
