22-year-old Boko Haram Commander Among 6 Who Surrendered in Borno

Military forces in Nigeria’s troubled Borno State report that six Boko Haram insurgents, including a 22-year-old allegedly holding a leadership position, have surrendered.

According to a statement from the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), the young man, identified as Adamu Muhammad, is suspected of involvement in attacks within Kukawa county, especially in Kangarwa, Alagarno, Doro Naira, and Dogon Chikwu villages.

Officials believe Adamu and others may have been affiliated with Boko Haram’s splinter faction Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) before defecting and surrendering.

“The surrendered terrorists escaped from an ISWAP hideout in Jubillaram, situated in southern Lake Chad,” the statement reads. The MNJTF gave the names of other surrendered fighters as Isah Ali, 18 years old; Hassan Modu, 18 years old; Nasir Idris, a 23-year-old escort for the Commander of Jubillaram, Usman Rash; Abba Aji, 21 years old; and Abubakar Isah, 20 years old.

The six individuals turned over ammunition and a warhead during their surrender. This brings the total number of Boko Haram terrorists who have surrendered to the military since late April to 119. These surrenders come as military operations continue to target Boko Haram and ISWAP activity in the region.
