Nigeria’s Worsening Security Crisis Reads Like Political Thriller

(Bauchi) – Secret videos, whistleblower claims and public petitions have placed Bauchi Senator Shehu Buba Umar under intense scrutiny, raising questions about security oversight, alleged armed group links and institutional accountability.
Senator Shehu Buba Umar of Bauchi South has become central to a national security debate after whistleblower Hassan Saleh Hussein, online platforms and civil society groups alleged links between him and armed groups in northern Nigeria. Buba, a former Senate security committee chairman, denies wrongdoing and calls the claims politically motivated.
The controversy has moved beyond political rivalry. At stake are wider questions about how Nigeria investigates security allegations involving powerful figures, how digital evidence is verified and how public confidence is protected during a prolonged fight against armed violence.
TruthNigeria previously reported how secret videos and viral claims pushed Senator Buba into national scrutiny, while another report examined the online storm surrounding Hassan Fulani, D English Alhaji and allegations involving the Bauchi senator.
Benue Claims Put Spotlight On Secret Recordings
The most serious allegations against Senator Buba emerged from media influencer Hassan Saleh Hussein, who said he secretly recorded activities inside the senator’s residence.
Hassan alleged that he hid a phone inside a toilet inside Sen. Buba’s residence to document meetings involving bandit-terrorists.
“I smuggled a phone into the toilet to record them,” Hassan said.
He alleged that the recordings showed individuals receiving firearms, ammunition and cash before attacks on communities in Benue State prior to the massacre in Yelewata June 13, 2025. Hassan also claimed that after the alleged attacks, Senator Buba was later part of an official delegation that visited victims of violence in the state.
The allegations have generated national attention, but Senator Buba has rejected claims linking him to armed groups and challenged the public to verify the materials being circulated.
Kuriga Abduction Claims Raise Wider Questions
The allegations later expanded to the March 7, 2024 abduction of 137 schoolchildren in Kuriga, Chikun County, Kaduna State. The children were recovered 17 days later after intervention of the Nigerian military and the National Security Director, Nuhu Ribadu.
The kidnapping of pupils and staff shocked communities across Kaduna and became one of Nigeria’s most closely watched school-abduction cases. Eight months after the release of the students, Kaduna Gov. Uba Sani announced a “peace agreement” with armed bands headquartered in the forest of Birnin Gwari on the border between Kaduna and Zamfara states. Such payments were denied by Gov. Sani and the federal government.
However, the kidnapping activity of the numerous bandit-terrorist gangs shifted from western and northern Kaduna during 2024 to several counties in Southern Kaduna in 2025, according to TruthNigeria investigation. Long-term kidnapping hostage camps on the forest border between Kachia County and Chikun County began to swell with hostages in early 2025.
Hassan alleged in online broadcasts that Senator Buba had links with bandit figures connected to the incident and claimed ransom payments from the victims’ release were shared. He also alleged that an aide identified as Adam helped facilitate specialised training involving drone operations and sniper skills for armed operatives.
Evidence, Not Virality, Becomes Central Question
Dr. Kabir Adamu, Managing Director of Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited said, “the allegations against a former security oversight official require a serious, depoliticized, thorough evidence-led investigation. It will reveal a whole lot.”
Security Experts Warn Of Institutional Risks
Major Dele Jerome, a security analyst, told TruthNigeria that, “allegations involving individuals connected to national security oversight positions can affect public confidence and operational cooperation.”
Jerome added: “The controversy has become an embarrassment for Nigeria’s military authorities and the country’s global image, especially as troops continue to face attacks and casualties while serious allegations remain unresolved.”
“A thorough investigation is needed to establish facts, restore public confidence and protect security institutions from further reputational damage,” Jerome told TruthNigeria.
Public Pressure Forces Security Debate
Civil society groups and youth organisations have intensified demands for investigation.
The Northern Youth For Peace and Progress, led by Comrade Hassan Sadau, urged Senate President Godswill Akpabio to act, demanding Senator Buba’s removal from security oversight duties over alleged links with armed groups. Buba was later removed as Senate security committee chairman.
The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria, which initially defended the senator, later called for an independent investigation by security agencies into the allegations.
Senate Powers And Due Process
Constitutional lawyer Boma Raphael Adewale told TruthNigeria reporter that removing a senator from a committee position and expelling a senator from the Senate are different constitutional processes.
“The Senate under Section 60 of the 1999 Constitution can regulate its own proceedings. Removing Senator Shehu Buba as Chairman of the Committee on National Security and Intelligence is an internal administrative decision,” Adewale said. He added that expulsion requires a two-thirds Senate resolution.
Adewale said the terrorism-related nature of the allegations justified the Senate’s action, noting that senators have no immunity from criminal investigation and digital materials must be forensically authenticated.
Why Security Partners Are Watching
Nigeria’s security partners, including the United States, would watch closely because allegations involving a former Senate security committee chairman raise concerns about intelligence oversight, counterterrorism cooperation and institutional credibility.

Senator Buba denies wrongdoing, calling the claims politically motivated. Analysts say only a credible, evidence-based process can establish facts and protect public trust.
