Kidnappers of Retired ECWA Pastor Demand N1 Million Ransom

Filibus Bamai, a retired pastor of Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), is the latest victim of the years-long persecution of Christians in Nigeria’s Muslim-dominated north.

Local press reported that Bamai, 65, was attacked at his residence in Kaduna, Northwest Nigeria, at about 12:50 a.m. local time on Sunday (Dec. 24), a week after he retired from ministry. He was taken away to an unknown destination wearing only a boxer brief while his wife was severely clubbed and left with a cut on her head and bruises on her back.

A source familiar with the matter who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday said the kidnappers are demanding N1 million ($1,116.69) to free the pastor. According to him, they first demanded N5 million ($5,583.47) but slashed it to N1 million on Monday (Dec. 25). He said N300,000 ($335.01) has so far been gathered to meet the kidnappers’ demand.
