Doctors Begin Work Strike Amidst Safety Concerns After Attack by Thugs

Activities have been paralyzed at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) in densely populated Ado-Ekiti town as a result of an emergency and indefinite strike declared by resident doctors of the hospital following a surprise attack by hoodlums.

The hoodlums, in a rush of misplaced rage and grief, attacked the hospital on Monday morning. A letter addressed to the chief medical director of the hospital by the resident doctors said the mob “assaulted some members of the association, destroyed several hospital equipment and properties, and stole a corpse during the attack.”

Local media reports that the catalyst for this disturbing incident was the death of a patient, an event that fanned the flames of discontent.

The deceased’s son mobilized thugs to attack the doctors and health workers, chase them away and took away the corpse without paying the medical bills. He blamed the hospital staff for negligence.

The doctors insist on boycotting work until the attackers are arrested and made to answer for their actions.
