Joy for the Super Eagles, heartache for Bafana Bafana

Nigeria put themselves on the cusp of glory as the Super Eagles nudged past South Africa to seal their place in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.

At the Stade de la Paix in Bouake on Wednesday, the Super Eagles beat Bafana Bafana (The Boys) 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes.

Both regular-time goals also came from penalties with captain William Troost-Ekong scoring after 67 minutes for Nigeria and Teboho Mokoena equalizing from a 90th-minute spot-kick.

The Aaron Mokoena equalizer came after Nigeria thought they had scored a second goal through a tap-in from star forward Victor Osimhen.

Ola Aina missed Nigeria’s third penalty, and Aaron Mokoena, Evidence Makgopa and Mothobi Mvala missed South Africa’s first, third and fourth to book the Super Eagles’ passage to Sunday’s final against the Abidjan boys.

As the Super Eagles went wild in celebration, joy unconfined for Nigeria, this was agony for South Africa.

Ezinwanne Onwuka reports for TruthNigeria from Abuja.
