Falcons Downed Again: Spain Claims Second Victory Over Nigeria

Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Spain in their second match of the Paris Olympics. The loss leaves the African champions on the brink of elimination from the tournament.

The Falcons had started their campaign with a disappointing 1-0 loss to Brazil, a result that set the tone for a challenging tournament. Against Spain, they put up a spirited fight but ultimately fell short.  Spain’s Alexia Putellas broke the deadlock in the 85th minute with a direct free-kick that sealed Nigeria’s fate.

The Falcons had shown resilience in the first half, frustrating the Spanish attack with their defensive organization. However, fatigue and the weight of the game began to tell in the second half, as Spain increased the pressure. With this defeat, Nigeria’s chances of progressing to the quarterfinals are now slim. They must win their final group match against Japan on Wednesday to keep their Olympic dream alive
