Nigerian Police Arrest Student for Staging Fake Abduction and Death

The Imo State Police Command has detained Jesse Chidebere, a 17-year-old student of Imo State University, for allegedly faking her own abduction and death.

Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye, stated Tuesday that the incident had caused considerable distress to Chidebere’s family and the university community.

“On October 26, at approximately 10:00 p.m., police received a distress call from concerned citizens, reporting Chidebere missing,” Okoye said. He added that a message from her WhatsApp account claimed she had been abducted and killed, directing her family to contact a police division for confirmation.

Following the report, police launched an investigation and, by the next morning, October 27, discovered that Chidebere was alive and had fabricated the story as a social media prank.

Okoye stated that an investigation was ongoing to determine her motive and that Chidebere would face prosecution. He added that Imo State Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma expressed concern over the “irresponsible behavior, which wasted valuable resources and caused public panic.”
