Karl Von Batten’s White House appointment claim raises questions about his $1.2 million advocacy contract for Nigeria’s leading opposition challenger

(Abuja) – A Washington lobbyist working for Nigeria’s opposition leader says President Donald Trump appointed him to a White House commission, a claim that could complicate his work ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 election.
The announcement, published on X by Dr. Karl Von Batten, managing partner of Washington firm Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C., comes six months after top opposition contender Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) political party signed a $1.2 million retainer with the firm.
Under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), Von Batten is tasked with aggressively countering the Nigerian government’s “no genocide” claims, challenging the legitimacy of incumbent Nigerian President Bola Tinubu amongst others, in American policy circles.
Neither the White House nor official U.S. federal directories have independently verified or named the specific presidential commission.
The developing controversy underscores how Africa’s most populous nation is outsourcing its domestic, legal and political battles to Washington.
Von Batten’s firm has spearheaded lawsuits attempting to compel the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to release redacted 1993 records concerning $460,000 asset forfeiture linked to President Tinubu in a Chicago narcotics investigation.
The financial warfare escalated further this week when Von Batten’s firm publicly claimed he rejected a $3 million bribe from a highly placed associate of President Tinubu, which he alleged was intended to buy an end to his anti-Tinubu campaign.
Ethics, Dual Assignments and the Contract Clause
The escalating international mudslinging has triggered sharp backlash among federal lawmakers in Abuja.
“This has gone beyond politics,” Philip Agbese, deputy spokesperson of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, told TruthNigeria in a statement.
“When desperate politicians begin to export their political battles and package Nigeria as a country whose leadership is allegedly built around criminality, they are damaging the image of every Nigerian who travels, studies, works, or seeks opportunities abroad.”
Legal and policy analysts emphasize that if the White House appointment is finalized, the lobbyist will face immediate ethical hurdles regarding his ongoing paid advocacy against sitting Nigerian officials.
“Every employment contract has a conflict-of-interest clause,” Legal expert Evans Ufeli told TruthNigeria.
“If the contract dictates that he cannot be a commissioner in the White House and at the same time maintain another assignment lobbying U.S. policymakers, then the contract will determine what happens. He will have to decide whether his firm relinquishes the Atiku contract or rejects the White House role.”
The FOIA Connection
While Von Batten’s firm attempts to release President Tinubu’s 1993 records, the president’s lawyers have filed a 16-page counter argument stating that releasing records under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) would jeopardize Tinubu’s privacy rights.
The clash centers on whether a sitting head of state retains personal privacy protections regarding pre-office conduct.
“As at the time President Tinubu contested in 2023, he was a private citizen, but now that he has become president, is he still a private citizen?” Ufeli said.
“He is a public official right now, and the people he governs have a right to know his affairs.”
Abuja Rejects Washington Proxy Battles
The Nigerian presidency has moved quickly to minimize Von Batten’s standing.
“Von Batten’s lobbying campaign and comments represent solely the position of an individual associated with Atiku-linked political interests, not the U.S. government or President Trump,” Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Media and Public Communications, told reporters.
Dare characterized the Washington dispatches as commercial public relations speculation rather than verified geopolitical intelligence.
Atiku’s campaign team countered, reminding the Tinubu-administration of its own $750,000-per-month Washington lobbying campaign.
“President Tinubu, before counting Atiku’s $1.2 million, account for your own $9 million arrangement,” Phrank Shaibu, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication to Atiku Abubakar, said in a press release defending the FARA contract.
“And before attacking the messenger, answer the $460,000 forfeited asset question.”
“Von Batten’s appointment is not enjoyable news for the desperate APC presidential horde that spent millions to lobby the US into endorsing Tinubu for another failed tenure…,” Demola Olarewaju, Senior Political Assistant to Atiku Abubakar, also said in a public statement.
Washington vs. Abuja: The Bigger Stakes
In late 2025, the U.S. heightened diplomatic pressure on Nigeria over systemic failures to protect Christians from terrorist violence in the country’s volatile central region, followed by a joint U.S.-Nigeria counter-terrorism military operation against Islamic State fighters.
Regional observers warn that Washington has become the premier battleground for Nigerian electoral legitimacy.
“While there is no evidence that Trump’s appointment was made because of Von Batten’s relationship with Atiku, the coincidence is politically significant,” Akin Malaolu, President of the Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum, said in a statement.
“The battle over Nigeria’s democratic credentials and international reputation is increasingly being fought in global policy centers, particularly Washington.”
Whether Von Batten’s appointment is a coincidence or something more, and whether the White House will confirm it remains an open question.
