Night Assault on Nigerian Base Shows ISWAP’s Staying Power in Lake Chad

Islamic militants attacked from Lake Chad’s island network, killing soldiers despite air support, as frontline sources warn outdated equipment and lack of medical care are costing lives.

KUKAWA, Nigeria — Islamic State West Africa Province fighters struck a Nigerian military base on the southern shore of Lake Chad after dark on Tuesday, attacking from the island chain they control and forcing troops of the 101 Special Forces Battalion into a fight on four flanks. Air power kept the position from falling. Soldiers still died inside it. Frontline accounts given to TruthNigeria said outdated weapons, thin morale and no functioning medical post meant some of the wounded never reached treatment.

Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer at Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, said troops of the 101 Special Forces Battalion crushed a coordinated multi-directional assault in Kukawa. The terrorists, he said, attacked in large numbers from four flanks and met stiff resistance. Supported by the Air Component, the troops used superior firepower, tactical manoeuvre and battlefield coordination, inflicted heavy casualties and forced the survivors to flee. Punch reported the statement on Wednesday.

Preliminary assessment put terrorist dead above 25, with 14 bodies recovered so far. Exploitation yielded a cache that included six AK-47 rifles. Further sweeps are under way. Goni confirmed that some gallant soldiers paid the supreme sacrifice, extended condolences to their families, and said their courage would remain a testament to service. He did not name them. He did not give a number.

A security source who also spoke to TruthNigeria on condition of anonymity went further, tying the deaths not only to the volume of fire but to what the troops lacked when they were hit. “The military are using outdated equipment. ISWAP has superior firepower,” the source said. “There is no morale on the front line due to poor funding. Even a hospital to treat the wounded soldiers is absent.” The source linked deaths among the severely injured to the lack of a proper medical response from the front line. In that telling, some of the soldiers who fell did not have to die in the first minutes of contact; they died because evacuation and treatment never arrived in time.

Local sources told TruthNigeria they heard the attack as it happened. In an exclusive account given to TruthNigeria, Abba Goni, a farmer familiar with the Kukawa–Lake Chad fringe, said Islamic State West Africa Province fighters hit the military position after dark Tuesday, 6 October 2026.

“Toumbun Gini, Toumbun Saje, Metele and Tumbun Ali are the islands of operations,” the local farmer said. “The Timbuktu Triangle is their forward base.” He called the night devastating and added the line that sits under every official claim of success: without the Air Force, the death toll among the soldiers would have been high. The firing, he said, came from different sides and did not break quickly.

A security source who spoke to Lake Chad analyst Zagazola Makama placed the clash between about 9:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, 6 October 2026. The where is the 101 Special Forces position in Kukawa Local Government, on the southern shore of Lake Chad. Makama’s dispatch matches the Army’s body count and adds the window of the fight.

Receding water opens canoe routes among the Tunbun islands. Fighters stage in Toumbun Gini and the neighbouring enclaves, use the Timbuktu Triangle as a forward base, and strike at night from more than one flank. If the assault fails, they fall back into marsh that conventional columns cannot seal, Abba Goni told TruthNigeria.

That is the pattern Makama has documented for months. After heavy losses, ISWAP disperses, returns to the island camps, re-arms, and later treats a repulsed raid as a victory.

The same sequence killed the base’s previous commander. On 9 March 2026 a pre-dawn multi-directional assault overran Kukawa positions. Lieutenant Colonel Umar Farouq, commanding officer under the 101 formation, was killed. Insurgents burned vehicles and took ammunition. Sahara Reporters identified him the next day. Yerwa Express News later reported that a telecommunications failure delayed reinforcements and air support. Farouq had repelled a large attack only weeks earlier. Seven months on, the battalion is still fighting the same style of night approach from the same island belt, and soldiers are still dying inside it.

TruthNigeria’s wider reporting shows why one repulsion does not close the axis. Chadian strikes have pushed fighters south into Nigerian Tunbuns near Kukawa. Internal ISWAP clashes inside the Timbuktu Triangle have not stopped external raids. The corridor that feeds attacks on the base also feeds taxation and execution of farmers and fishermen around Baga and Dumba. The military position and the civilian shoreline are hit by the same network, as set out in Nigeria’s Lake Chad massacres.

Tuesday moved the body count, not the ground. Troops recovered 14 bodies and six rifles. Soldiers died on a base whose commander was killed in the same kind of assault seven months ago. Captain Goni said the fight showed combat readiness. The farmer Abba Goni said air power was what kept the military toll from rising. The anonymous source said outdated weapons, thin morale and no front-line hospital turned wounds into funerals. None of that changes the pattern: night, four flanks, the islands, withdrawal, return.

Further exploitation figures and an official list of the soldiers killed had not been published when this report was filed. Until the Tunbun routes and the Timbuktu Triangle are denied as staging ground, Kukawa’s nights will keep producing the same losses the families already know, Abba Goni added.
