KADUNA, Nigeria — Six‑year‑old Success is recovering in hospital after surviving a violent attack that killed nine people in her Christian community in Kaduna State. The child was shot twice as she fled with her mother during an assault attributed to Fulani ethnic militants, according to local humanitarian workers assisting the family.
Medical officials say the injuries were severe. Surgeons removed part of her ankle bone during emergency treatment, leaving her at risk of permanent disability without further reconstructive care. Success has spent months undergoing treatment and rehabilitation.
She has now been admitted for specialist surgery, supported by the humanitarian groups Vans Without Borders and Equipping the Persecuted. Doctors plan additional procedures, including reconstructive ankle work and a skin graft, aimed at improving her chances of walking normally.
Aid workers say Success’s case reflects a wider pattern of harm faced by civilians in parts of northern Nigeria affected by extremist violence. Christian communities in Kaduna and neighboring states have reported repeated attacks, displacement, and limited access to medical and financial assistance.
Humanitarian organizations like Equipping the Persecuted say they continue to provide support where possible but warn that many victims face long recovery periods and significant unmet needs.
